Become a Registered Horticultural Therapist

If you've reached this page you probably already know what horticultural therapy is.  If not, click here.

The America Horticultural Therapy Association  (AHTA) is the body that reviews credentials and lists individuals as Registered Horticultural Therapists.  The requirements are listed on their web pages at http://www.ahta.org/professional_advancement/.

There are four basic areas that need to be met for registration: human science courses, horticulture courses, horticultural therapy courses, and an internship.  For many of us, we need to pick up courses in one or more areas, and find a Registered Horticultural Therapist to supervise our internships.  Most of us have demanding work schedules and find taking classes at local colleges to be challenging.  Taking courses on-line can be one way to pursue registration without quitting our jobs.  Taking care of the Internship requirement is yet another challenge.

While attending a horticultural therapy class several of us decided to start a wiki that would save others from all the hunting for on-line or distance programs we had been through.  We're hoping that others will join in with their ideas and experiences so that everyone can find a program that will meet their needs.

If you look at the sidebar to the right, you'll see a page for each of the four areas listed above.  If you would like to become a write for this wiki, please click on the link and you will be granted writer status.  A wiki works best when many contribute, so please feel free to add your own experiences!

Disclaimer: Information on this wiki has been verified by one or more individuals but IS NOT in any way approved or certified by the American Horticultural Therapy Association.  Please verify the eligibility of any courses you plan to take with a member of the Professional Registration Work Team.  You can find out who the current person to contact is by e-mailing AHTA Executive Director, Martha Heinze at martha@ahta.org.
